IT IS DARK and the fire has burned low. She is in his arms and it feels correct, proper, like he has missed this his entire life. Now he understands what Mal'akal spoke of when he talked of Farian. Only now does he understand that a bondmate is simply the other half of one's soul.

She stirs and he senses that she is awake.

“Why do you do this?” he asks, a question that has been preying on him as she slept.

“Do what?”

“Help us. Why do you put yourself at risk, leave your own people, in order to come here and help those you do not know and have not even met?”

He feels her take a deep breath, tense somewhat. “Because I have to.”

“Have to?” He props his head up on one hand so he can better see her in the glow of the fire.

“My parents, my mother and father, they are wealthy. On my world they are one of the most powerful and richest families that there is.”

“So?” he asks, confused.

“So, they made all that money, got all that power, from treasure hunting. From devastating planets just like yours. I was born into it, ate and drank and clothed myself in the proceeds of someone else's destruction. The only thing I can do now is attempt to pay back just a little of what I've taken.”

Her skin is flushed in the heat and he feels the truth of her words as she says them, feels the weight that she carries every day.

“It is your inheritance,” he says.

“In a way.”

“I, too, understand what it is to inherit something,” he says.

Her eyes darken a little. “Your father was your chief.”

“And so I am now chief,” he says. “This is unusual for our people. But many things about Mal'akal were unusual.”

“He brought you up to kill him?” she asks.

Galand shrugs. “Yes, he did, though I'm not sure I ever thought of it like that. I'm not sure I ever thought of anything, really. I was raised to lead, I never questioned it, never even wondered if this was what I wanted.”

“Is it not what you want?”

“I didn't say that.” He looks down at her, at the soft curve of her cheek. “My father was unusual in another respect. He was bonded. Very few of our people bond. But my father and my mother... they were as one. Two sides of the same person. I did not understand.” He laughs at his younger self.

“What didn't you understand?”

“I didn't understand why someone would bond to just one female when there were so many others to take pleasure in as you wished,” Galan admits.

A strange look passes over her face. Fear, he thinks, though he's not sure. “And now you understand?”

How can he lie? He doesn't pretend to know what is happening here. All he can do is tell the truth about what he is feeling. “I understand.”

“I did not agree to bond with you,” she says.

He lays a hand on her stomach. “I know.” He doesn't know yet what to do about this.
